Aviation fuel

Aviation kerosene is all about safety and quality, JP54 fuel requirements for aircraft and vehicles are typically different. Therefore there are strict quality and safety requirements for aircraft fuel and limitations on components that can be used for aviation fuel.

Aviation Kerosene

Aviation kerosene is a specialized type of petroleum-based fuel used to power aircraft. It is generally of a higher quality than fuels used in less critical applications, such as heating or road transport. JP54 contains additives to reduce the risk of icing or explosion due to high temperature and other properties.

49°C

Jet fuel is a clear to straw-colored fuel based on either an unleaded kerosene (Jet A-1) or a naphtha-kerosene blend (Jet B). Similar to diesel fuel, it can be used in either compression ignition engines or turbine engines.

Jet A

Types

Jet A-1 is the standard specification fuel used in the rest of the world other than the former Soviet states, where TS-1 is the most common standard. Both Jet A and Jet A-1 have a flashpoint higher than 38 °C (100 °F), with an autoignition temperature of 210 °C ( 410 °F).

Differences Between JET A and JET A-1

The primary difference is the lower freezing point of A-1;

  • Jet A -40°C
  • Jet A-1 -47°C
Certification

ASTM D910 / ASTM D6227

The American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) standard specifications for aviation kerosene.

Energy Content

The net energy content for aviation fuels depends on their composition.

Some typical values are:

  • Avgas 80, 55.65 MJ/Kg, density at 15 °C is 690 kg/m3.
  • Kerosene type Jet A-1, 43.15 MJ/Kg, density at 15 °C is 804 kg/m3.
  • Kerosene type Jet TS-1 (for lower temperatures), 43.2 MJ/kg.

PJSC Sakhavostokneftegaz aims to meet and exceed stringent aviation kerosene quality. Jet fuel components are strictly examined by the company’s analytic technical department to meet all international regulations. That’s why our aviation fuel gives high performance to piston-engine aircraft and thereby significantly improving efficiency, safety and ensures comfort with every flight.

Density

In performance calculations, airline manufacturers use a density of Jet fuel around 6.7 lb/US gal or 0.8 kg/l.

Chemical Composition

Aviation fuels consist of blends of over two thousand chemicals, primarily hydrocarbons (paraffin, olefins, naphthenes, and aromatics)

The highest quality of aviation fuel compounds is achieved through multiple refining processes of crude oil, which is then mixed into distinctive compositions per manufacturing strict specifications.

Aviation kerosene refining

PJSC Sakhavostokneftegaz uses additives authorized for aviation productions, including anti-knock agents, colorants, antioxidants & anti-electrostatic agents that enrich the hydrocarbon mixtures and ensure that the required properties/elements are formed.

Jet fuel or aviation kerosene TS-1 is made from crude oil fractions by direct distillation. The resulting product is a mixture of volatile hydrocarbons boiling mixed compositions from 150 to 250 degrees. This type of fuel is commonly used for jet combustion engines.

Our oil refinery is supported by our accredited laboratories and experienced research and development scientists. The company offers a 24 months guarantee for our types of Jet fuel grades.

The company is an active member of European collaborative projects, ambitiously seeking a new formula for aviation fuel. Participation in projects assures that PJSC Sakhavostokneftegaz will continue to provide the highest Jet fuel quality for private and commercial airlines across the globe.

Quality control

PJSC Sakhavostokneftegaz monitors our Jet fuel quality at all stages in refining and production, from the process of receiving, storing, and preparing for delivery for refueling aircraft.

The refinery also boasts an in-house certified laboratory, equipped with modern equipment specifically designed for quality control of Jet fuel.

The main tasks of the laboratory are:

  • Quality control of aviation fuel and lubricants at the stages of aviation fuel supply for air transportation;
  • Quality control of aviation fuel and lubricants working in aviation systems, assessment of the possibility of their further use;
  • Quality control of aviation fuel and lubricants selected in connection with the investigation of aircraft accidents and incidents with civil aircraft.

Our qualified personnel quickly and reliably conducts all the necessary operations at the stage of the movement of the finished product from reception from tank trucks to delivery to the aircraft. Thus allowing us to guarantee our buyers, the aviation kerosene retains its quality of the product and services we provided.
